About Burundi

About Burundi

Burundi is one of the most poverty stricken countries in the world. It is nestled between the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania in central Africa. The country has two capitals, Bujumbura and Gitega. Bujumbura was the only capital for much of the country’s history. In 2019 the government decided to make Gitega the political capital, while Bujumbura became the economic capital. For decades Burundians have suffered from never ending wars, genocide, and rampant corruption. But despite of all this, Burundi is among the African countries with beautiful and rich nature, and wonderful people with a welcoming heart and smile. There are two main religions: Christianity and Islam. Rerarding the economy, the people of Burundi live mainly by farming. Coffee and tea are important exports. Farmers also grow bananas, sweet potatoes, cassava, beans, sugarcane, and corn (maize). A small number of manufacturers make beverages, cooking oil, sugar, cigarettes, and blankets. Burundi has some deposits of gems and gold.

The organization stopped operating since 1999 because of the civil war and genocide that was taking place at that time. They started from scratch, with nothing and with no financial support from anybody. They had a desire to bring a positive change in their society, which was facing a lot of challenges, and one of the big challenges was and it still is poverty. Burundi YMCA conducts feeding programs for orphans and children. They provide a specially formulated porridge to help combat malnutrition. They also train peopel how to generate income in order to fight poverty, they also teach in their training centers leadership skills, ICT, food conservation, communication skills and Biblical trainings. In addition to that, they run an initiative called orphans care initiative. This initiative aim to give a family to orphans who lost both parents whether by death or abandonment. Burundi YMCA will bring in the kids between the age of 0 to 7 years, and with the help of Christian spouses who are volunteering within the Y, will raise them up as their own children thus providing a home and a family to those orphans. They are now 6 orphans in Burundi YMCA care and the organization is hoping to care to more than 24 orphans by the end of 2026.

About Youth for Christ

About Youth for Christ

The idea of Youth For Christ Burundi was pioneered under the leadership of Freddy Tuyizere in 1998. Freddy was inspired to start the program after he heard of Youth for Christ Rwanda's Africa vision of "Generation 21". The organiztion initially started with prayer and evangelism meetings, and work with street kids and orphans. This gradually developed into the 'Homes of Hope' orphanages, and the desire to teach godly leadership in their schools. Youth for Christ in Burundi operate 4 schools, two orphanages and a health center. Their schools are among the highest rated in Burundi. The high school is a live-in boarding school and conducts classes exclusively in English. They have two orphanages that are called “Homes of Hope”. One is in Gitega and the other in Cibitoke.
