About Burundi
Burundi is one of the most poverty stricken countries in the world. It is nestled between the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania in central Africa. The country has two capitals, Bujumbura and Gitega. Bujumbura was the only capital for much of the country’s history. In 2019 the government decided to make Gitega the political capital, while Bujumbura became the economic capital. For decades Burundians have suffered from never ending wars, genocide, and rampant corruption. But despite of all this, Burundi is among the African countries with beautiful and rich nature, and wonderful people with a welcoming heart and smile. There are two main religions: Christianity and Islam. Rerarding the economy, the people of Burundi live mainly by farming. Coffee and tea are important exports. Farmers also grow bananas, sweet potatoes, cassava, beans, sugarcane, and corn (maize). A small number of manufacturers make beverages, cooking oil, sugar, cigarettes, and blankets. Burundi has some deposits of gems and gold.
